Worcester Bishop bans Woke School from calling itself “Catholic” for waving “BLM and LGBTQ flags”

On Thursday, a Catholic bishop in Worcester, Massachusetts, issued a decree against The Nativity School, a Jesuit private high school in Central Massachusetts, to ignore his call not to display flags in support of LGBT pride and the Black Lives Matter movement.

The school declined his request to remove the flags. As a result, Bishop Robert J. McManus of the Diocese of Worcester took the title of “Catholic” from the school.

The following are the penalties against the Nativity School:

  • The Nativity School of Worcester is now barred from identifying itself as a “Catholic” school and can no longer use the title “Catholic” to describe itself;
  • Liturgies, sacraments, and sacraments are no longer permitted on the premises of the Nativity School or sponsored by the Nativity School in any church building or chapel in the Diocese of Worcester;
  • The School of the Nativity is not permitted to undertake any fundraising involving diocesan institutions in the Diocese of Worcester and is not permitted to be entered or advertised in the Diocesan Directory;
  • The name of the Honorary Bishop Daniel P. Riley should be removed from the list of the Board of Trustees of the Nativity School.

Read the full decree below, published in The Catholic Free Press, the official newspaper of the Diocese of Worcester:

The Christmas School, located at 37 Lincoln Street in Worcester, Massachusetts, was established in 2003 and developed by the senior administration of Worcester’s Holy Cross College to cope with the devastating graduation rate among boys experiencing economic insecurity. It currently serves boys from fifth to eighth grade.

The school claims to be a “Catholic” school associated with the Roman Catholic / Jesuit tradition. The school administration allowed the flags “Life of Blacks Matters” and “Gay Pride” in front of the school for a period of time.

I publicly stated in an open letter of May 4, 2022, that “these symbols (flags) embody specific goals or ideologies (which) contradict Catholic social and moral teaching.” My contention is that the Gay Pride flag supports gay marriage and the active life of LGBTQ +.

This is also true of “Black life matters.” The Catholic Church teaches that all life is sacred, and the Church certainly stands unequivocally behind the expression “the life of blacks matters” and strongly affirms that all lives matter.

However, the Life of Blacks Matters movement has adopted this phrase and promotes a platform that directly contradicts Catholic social teaching on the importance and role of the nuclear family and seeks to disrupt the family structure in clear opposition to Catholic teaching. .

Waving these flags in front of a Catholic school sends a mixed, confusing and scandalous message to the public about the Church’s position on these important moral and social issues.

According to canon 803, §§ 1-3 of the Code of Canon Law, the diocesan bishop must maintain vigilance over Catholic schools within his diocese, even those run by lay groups who want to use the title “Catholic” for their schools. Such use requires ecclesiastical approval (canon 803, §3).

An Instruction recently published by the Holy See through the Dicastery of Catholic Education, entitled “The Identity of the Catholic School for a Culture of Dialogue,” states that “Catholic schools are part of the Church’s mission” (para. 21) and have a great responsibility. to testify through an educational project clearly inspired by the gospel (par. 28). Catholic schools are church entities. As such, they participate in the evangelizing mission of the Church and represent the privileged environment in which the education of the Church takes place. ” (par. 30)

As a diocesan bishop, it is my sacred duty and inherent responsibility to determine when a school that claims to be “Catholic” acts in a manner that is contrary to the teachings of the Catholic Church and disregards my legitimate authority as guardian and overseer of Catholicism. education at the Diocese of Worcester. Despite my insistence that the school administration remove these flags because of the confusion and correct theological scandal they are making and can promote, they refuse to do so. This leaves me no choice but to take canonical action.

This decree shall enter into force immediately.
