MANILA, Philippines – Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Coon, the PBA’s most awarded coach, is ready to join the national cell program.
No less than Gilas Filipinos’ program director Chot Reyes revealed the development during his speech for the record sixth coach of the year at the PBA Press Corps Award on Tuesday night at Novotel Manila in Cubao, Quezon City.
“He is the winning coach in PBA history. He has to be on this team that is competing in the World Cup, “Reyes told the Inquirer.
San Miguel Corporation Athletic Director Alfransis Chua, who was also named CEO of the year tonight, said Coon will begin serving the national team as he prepares for the 2023 World Cup, which the Philippines will host Japan and Indonesia, go at high speed.
“I don’t see any complications,” said Chua, also a Barangay Ginebra representative on the PBA board, about Koun’s role in Gilas Filipinas.
This move was a product of a meeting behind closed doors between the two power blocs governing the country’s upper echelons.
Coon steered the National Five for a gold medal at the Southeast Asian Games here in 2019. He also steered the Centennial Team’s shots on the podium during the Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand.
Reyes and Coon competed together in this bronze medal competition. Prior to that, the former served as an assistant to the latter in the legendary Alaska franchise.
