The United States removes a relative of Venezuelan Maduro from the list of sanctions Political news

Carlos Eric Malpica Flores, a former national treasurer, was blacklisted in 2017 on charges of undermining democracy.

The United States has imposed sanctions on a relative of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, weeks after Washington said it was taking steps to promote dialogue between Maduro’s government and the US-backed Venezuelan opposition.

The US Treasury Department confirmed on Friday that it has removed Carlos Eric Malpica Flores, a former national treasurer of Venezuela, from a blacklist he was placed on in 2017 on charges of undermining democracy.

Malpica Flores also previously held a top position in the national oil company PDVSA and is the nephew of First Lady Celia Flores.

The move follows a meeting between a delegation of senior US officials and Maduro in Caracas in March, seen as an attempt to start talks between the government and Venezuela’s opposition politicians.

Last month, the Biden administration also moved to easing some economic sanctions on Venezuela as part of this effort to promote negotiations. Two senior US government officials told the Associated Press at the time that Malpica Flores would be removed from the sanctions list.

U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said last week that he believes discussions between the government and the opposition led by Juan Guaido will resume in Mexico City, and suggested further easing of sanctions if Maduro compromises.

But so is Washington Maduro said from the recent summit of America, along with the presidents of Nicaragua and Cuba, which drew criticism from other leaders in the region.

Analysts too indicated that the efforts of US President Joe Biden to address migration in North and South America may be complicated by the exclusion of Venezuela in particular from these negotiations.

More than 6 million people have fled the country in recent years amid growing violence, poverty and a devastating socio-economic crisis, according to the United Nations.
