After some recent leaksSony revealed its new first-class WH-1000XM5 headphones with a completely new sophisticated design and countless upgrades. Although everything is a little better than the previous generation, they cost $ 399, a price increase of $ 50 compared to 1000XM4s.

Sony is probably making some of the the best noise canceling headphones available, but the all-new Sony WH-1000XM5 raises the bar. Not only with the improved rotating stem and the comfortable headband, but also in terms of sound quality, microphones, battery life and noise reduction.

While initial leaks suggested a new processor for improved ANC, Sony actually added a second processor to these headphones. Thanks to this secondary chipset, the 1000XM5 is even better with “medium and high frequency noise” that you will experience around the city, in the office or every day.

The company promises 30 hours of battery life with ANC activated and 40 hours without. As usual, they charge via USB-C and take a little over three hours to fully recharge.

Sony has chosen a sophisticated design similar to the one we saw from Apple and Bose. The new sliding and rotating stem design certainly looks good, but they are made of plastic, not metal. And while this may be repulsive to some, it will also ensure that the 1000XM5s are lightweight and comfortable.

Other changes include a smaller 30mm driver in each handset, compared to the larger 40mm option from the XM4. This may sound like a downside to some, but Sony says that this new and improved driver provides significantly improved and unsurpassed sound clarity, natural tones and tight bass reproduction.

There are also eight microphones with these latest Sony headphones. Yes, we said eight. Four of them are for ANC, while the other four provide high quality voice calls. This is because these four microphones use beamforming technology and AI noise reduction algorithms to improve voice clarity.

Sony’s usual flagship high-end features remain, including touch controls on both earphones and a variety of application customization controls. The new style of stem means they no longer have a foldable portability design, so keep that in mind before you buy.

The new Sony WH-1000XM5 costs $ 399, comes in black or silver and will be available from May 20. Pre-order yours now from the link below.
