MANILA, Philippines – RJ Abarrientos’ career at UAAP at Tamaraws Far Eastern University has lasted just one season, as he is ready to sign with Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus in the Korean Basketball League (KBL).
According to the Korean news site Jumpball, the guard of Gilas Pilipinas will be imported by Ulsan according to the quota of Asian players.
Abarientos is ready to join a teammate in the national team SJ Belangel after signing a two-year contract with Daegu KOGAS Pegasus.
The 22-year-old played impressively during the consecutive friendly matches of Gilas Pilipinas against Korea, failing in both matches.
Abarientos scored 17 points in 5 of 10 shots for three points in his second demonstration match against the Koreans, who won 106-102 on Saturday.
He is part of the Gilas Pilipinas group, which will compete in the third window of the Asian qualifiers for the Fiba World Cup against New Zealand on June 30 and India on July 3.
The 5-foot-11 guard averaged 13.8 points with 32 percent shooting from depth to make 4.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.3 steals in his first year with the Far Eastern University in the men’s basketball tournament. UAAP Season 84.
Abarientos had at least three more years to play with Tamarau, who finished fourth in the previous season with a record of 7-7.
