Called the “Spanish Titanic”, the 22-year-old with a red shirt tore the cover of the baseball this season for Texas. In 67 games, Melendez struck .387 / .508 / .863 with 32 home runs and 94 RBI.
Melendez is currently ranked 115th among the best MLB.com draft prospects.
“With the strength of its 6-foot 3 and 225-pound frame and right-handed swing up, Melendez is focused on moving balls in the air and produces a plus-plus raw force that plays from fal-pole to fal-pole.” Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com writes. “He doesn’t have exceptional bat speed, so there are some concerns about how he will handle quality speed against more advanced pitchers.”
The Miami Marlins selected Melendez in the 16th round of the 2021 draft. However, Melendez never agreed to agree with the Marlin family, instead vying to return to college.
