Interruption of Cloudflare shattered large parts of the Internet

Cloudflare was interrupted on Tuesday morning, according to its status page. Cloudflare technology powers many other sites and services on the Internet, and the outage appears to have affected a number of different sites, including Discord, Shopify, Grindr, Fitbit and Peleton. according to Downdetector. Signals of problems began around 2:30 p.m. ET. Cloudflare reported that he solved the problem at 4:06 ET.

The problems were the most problematic for the users of Cloudflare’s own DNS lookup service. Multiple Border staff members found that they did not have access to websites at all during the outage as a result of using Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 DNS service. Fortunately, the fix here is simple: change your DNS configuration. I found that simply switching to my ISP’s default DNS settings solved most of my problems.

Cloudflare has had similar problems in the past, such as in July and August 2020. Not a good look for a company that advertises its services as a way to reduce downtime.

Updated June 21, 4:36 AM ET: Updated with confirmation from Cloudflare that the issues have been resolved.
