Brand new baby hippo ‘strong and looking really healthy so far’

(CNN) – Bibi the hippo gave birth Wednesday evening, the Cincinnati Zoo said in a tweet Thursday.

“Bibi gave birth around 10 p.m. and so far everything seems to be going well for mom and baby,” the zoo said. “They will stay out of the habitat for about 2 weeks to bond.”

The name will likely be discussed today, Jenna Wingate, senior zoologist with the zoo’s African team, told CNN New Day on Thursday.

“We just focused on getting this healthy calf out into the world and we focused on Bibi,” Wingate said.

“We’re very happy to say that the baby is going strong and looking really healthy so far,” Wingate said.

That means Fiona, Bibi’s daughter, is officially a big sister.

Fiona became an international celebrity after she was born six weeks premature in 2017, weighing just 29 pounds at birth. Hippos are usually born weighing about 100 pounds.

Fiona’s weight was a record low for a hippopotamus, but she managed to survive despite everything, CNN previously reported. Fiona now weighs about 1,300 pounds.

Wingate said the zoo was “cautiously optimistic” about Bibi’s latest pregnancy, given how premature Fiona was born.

“This calf looks really healthy,” Wingate said. “We haven’t found the weight of this one yet, but we estimate it to be over 50 pounds for sure, and usually they’re around 50-100 pounds.”

The zoo said in a news release that Bibi and her baby “will not be visible to the public right away” but that it is working to “share photos and videos if the care team is able to retrieve them without disturbing them.”

Thursday afternoon zoo posted a video of a bouncy new baby hippo frolicking in an indoor pool.

“The newborn hippo has spent most of the day in the indoor pools with Bibi, exploring, resting and nursing, which is exactly what the hippo care team was hoping for,” the zoo said on Twitter. “Hippos spend most of their lives in water, and hippopotamuses even nurse underwater.”
