Berlin-based sales team M-Appeal ended sales of the Berlin Panorama entitled “Concerned Citizen” – Idan HagelThe satirical film about privileges and prejudices takes place in Tel Aviv – for several additional territories.

Distribution in the United Kingdom and Ireland will be done by Peccadillo Pictures; Arti Film will distribute the film in the Benelux, and later this year it is planned to be released in a national cinema in selected cinemas; Tongariro Releasing has taken over the rights to Poland, planning to hold festivals and cinema in art house cinemas for the summer of 2022; and Queer Kino has joined in to make the film in the Czech Republic, where the Mezipatra Queer Film Festival will have its national premiere, and the release is scheduled for early 2023.

Following its world premiere at the Berlinale in February, the film has already been selected for distribution in North America (Greenwich Entertainment), Germany and Austria (Salzgeber).

The Concerned Citizen follows Ben, a liberal gay man, as he tries to improve his neighborhood in southern Tel Aviv by planting a tree on his street. This triggered a series of events that led to him getting involved in the brutal police arrest of an immigrant. The resulting guilt provokes Ben’s self-image and threatens to destroy his relationship and his aspirations for fatherhood.

With a sophisticated and thought-provoking approach to its central gay characters, the film takes a sharp look at the social issues of gentrification, racism and police brutality.

Hagel said: “Although the film focuses on gay heroes, it does so to reflect the bourgeois elements of the Tel Aviv community, to tell a story about LGBTQ heroes from different angles. It’s not necessarily about love or going out, it’s about a world where gay characters – who are usually victims – become victims. “

Tom Abel, managing director of Peccadillo Pictures, said: “The Concerned Citizen” is a revealing portrait of the effects of accidental racism. A very powerful film that we are proud to have in the Peccadillo catalog. ”

Hans Kok, managing partner at Arti Film, added: “The Concerned Citizen offers a true vision of everyday life in Tel Aviv, Israel.”

Starring Shlomi Bertonov and Ariel Wolf, the film was produced by Hagel alongside Gil Sima, Benjamin Gurevich and Itai Akirav. It is supported by the Rabinovich Film Fund.
