Industry leaders, including Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra, RPG Enterprises chairman Harsh Goenka and Biocon Ltd chairman Kieran Mazumdar-Shaw on Monday backed the Agnipath scheme, saying it has great potential for youth employment in the corporate sector.
Mahindra also expressed concern about the violence against the scheme, saying the aerospace conglomerate’s agricultural equipment welcomed the opportunity to recruit trained, capable and young people to the program.
The Agnipath scheme, announced on June 14, envisions recruiting young people between the ages of 17 and a half to 21 for just four years, with a provision to keep 25 percent of them for another 15 years.
The government later extended the upper age limit to 23 for recruitment in 2022. Protests against the Center’s scheme erupted in several states.
Commenting on the scheme, Mahindra said there was great potential for hiring Agniveers in the corporate sector.
“Saddened by the violence surrounding the #Agneepath program. “When the scheme was discussed last year, I said – and I repeat – the discipline and skills that Agniveers will acquire will make them extremely fit to work,” Mahindra tweeted. Mahindra Group welcomes the opportunity to hire such trained and capable young people, he added.
Asked by a Twitter user what post will be provided by Agniveers’ Mahindra Group, he replied: “Great potential for hiring Agniveers in the corporate sector. With leadership, teamwork and physical training, Agniveers provides market-ready professional solutions for the industry, covering the full range from operations to supply chain administration and management. Responding to Mahindra’s tweet, Goenka said: “The RPG group also welcomes the opportunity to hire Agniveers. I hope that other corporations will also join us in fulfilling this promise and guaranteeing our young people a future.
Expressing such views, Mazumdar-Shaw wrote on Twitter: “I firmly believe that Agniveers will have a clear advantage in gaining the industrial labor market.” Apollo Hospitals Group, joint managing director of Sangita Reddy, tweeted: “I firmly believe that the discipline and skills that #Agniveers will acquire will provide a market-ready Prof. Salt 4 R industry. I sincerely hope that the industry supports the recruitment of such capable young people… “TVS Motor Company Managing Director Sudarshan Venu said on Friday that the Agnipath scheme will have a significant positive impact on society and contribute significantly to nation-building.
“Agniveers will play a key role in furthering economic growth and strengthening society in the coming years,” Venu said in a statement.
Violent protests shook several states last week, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Telangana, while peaceful campaigns against the scheme took place in several places.
The Indian railways had borne the brunt of the violence. More than 500 trains were canceled on Monday due to protests.
A number of opposition political parties and a significant number of military experts have also criticized the scheme, saying it would adversely affect the functioning of the armed forces.
Under the scheme, 25% of recruits will be detained for regular service, while others will retire without tips and retirement benefits.
