A young mother, Alex Pedraza, was fatally shot during a shooting in West Lawn during a shooting in Chicago, police said

CHICAGO (WLS) – A family is rocked by the loss of a young mother who was shot and killed in the West Lawn neighborhood of Chicago on Sunday’s Southwest Side.

Family members said 21-year-old Alex Pedraza was out with friends when the dispute ended with her death.

The family said Alex had actually just buried his mother less than a year ago. Now her own daughter, who is only 8 months old, will grow up without her mother.

“She wanted to be a mother and raise a child,” said Alex’s aunt, Tracy King. “She loved her! And like, now her daughter is gone.

The young girl shared only a few months with her mother.

“She will never know what her mother was like,” said Alex’s father, Jesse Pedraza. “How beautiful she was!”

Baby Azalea already has one less person to give her kisses and leaves her family with another loved one to bury.

“I asked her where she was going? She said she was an adult, then put me in a headache and told me she loved me and didn’t worry about her. It’s going to be okay, “Jesse recalls.

But Alex was never able to return home after a Sunday night out with friends in West Lawn after being shot several times.

Police said the 21-year-old was arguing with a woman outside near 64th Street and South Kilburn Avenue when an unknown man approached and shot her.

She died at the hospital less than a year after the death of her own mother.

“She’s with her mother now. That’s the only thing keeping me from going crazy,” King said.

“I can’t stop thinking about her. I’m crying to sleep every night,” Jesse said.

The family is now seeking help from crisis response teams. They plan to raise baby Azalea while keeping her mother’s memory alive in the legacy she left behind.

“I need her. I still need her, “Jesse said. “It’s going to be hard for me to live without her. Yes, I miss her a lot. And I need her. I need her. I still need her!”

“I’m really going to miss her so much. I really am! I just want justice for my baby, that’s all,” said Alex’s grandmother, Tina Pedraza.

The family is planning her funeral, as police are still investigating the shooting. Authorities said no one had been detained so far.
