40 MLAs from Maharashtra arrive in Guwahati

A group of 40 MLAs from Maharshtra, led by dissident leader Shiv Senna Eknat Shinde, arrived here on Wednesday morning and were taken to a luxury hotel on the outskirts of the city under heavy guard.

The MLA was received at the airport by BJP MPs Palab Lochan Das and Sushanta Borgohain. Shinde, who initially declined to speak to media outlets waiting in front of the airport, later said he had “the support of 40 MPPs”.

The WFP arrived here from Surat and was taken to the hotel by three buses of the Assam State Transport Corporation. There is speculation that Chief Minister Himanta Bisua Sarma is likely to meet with the MPP during the day, although the BJP party or its office is yet to meet to confirm the meeting.

Strict security was imposed with a huge group of police personnel located in and around the hotel. The MPP was taken to Surat from Mumbai on Tuesday and the decision to move to Guwahati was made for security reasons, according to a BJP source. The government in Maharashtra, led by Shiv Senna, is facing a crisis following the riot of part of its MPP led by Shinde.
