2022 F1 Canadian GP FP3: What did we learn?

The third free training for 2022 F1 of Canada GP greeted the teams with torrential conditions and what followed was a trip down the memory lane for the fans. Formula One grid legends Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso showed their class in tough wet conditions, with the two swapping places at the top of the schedule, while the big players at Red Bull and Ferrari preferred to keep things in the garage.

Although the race is expected to take place in sunny and dry conditions, there was a lot of running during FP3, given the very high probability of a wet qualifying session that could shift the grid for Sunday’s race. The session ended with an alpine 1-3 (surprising surprise!) With Alonso announcing the fastest time of the session, 0.05 seconds faster than Vettel did in his Aston Martin, while Esteban Ocon was third with an improved lap in end of session. So let’s find out what we learned in a session marked by torrential conditions!


# 1 If it stays wet, the grid can be stirred for the main race

For Canada’s GP on Sunday, it is probably in the best interest for these conditions to remain prevailing when qualifying begins. Max Verstappen it will be difficult to catch dry, and with Charles Leclerc, who is already starting from behind, it can be quite a simple race for the Dutch pilot.

If the conditions remain the same as in FP3, however, we could consider a scenario in which the network can be shuffled for a long time, preceded by an action-packed race. There are many unanswered questions to the teams in these conditions and the good position of the network will require a lot of things to develop. Canada’s F1 2022 GP qualifier may be just the most important session of the weekend.


# 2 Ferrari looks impressive in these conditions, while Red Bull seems to be struggling

Big players like Ferrari and Red Bull didn’t run as much as expected because they didn’t want to risk damaging their cars. Whatever the limited movement the cars have made, Ferrari seems to have an excellent ability to ignite its tires faster than any other team. With wet tires, Carlos Sainz turned purple in the S1 on his first lap, which also gave Ferrari a hand. Under these conditions, the Scarlet car can simply stand out.

Red Bull, on the other hand, may have been a little too conservative with his runs. Every time Max Verstappen went out, he did it for just one lap, and in almost all of those runs, Red Bull didn’t look comfortable. Although there is very little running to judge, Red Bull may be a little worried about his speed in these conditions.


№ 3 Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel return the clock to Canada’s F1 in 2022

The highlight of the session (and maybe the season, if nostalgia kicks you in) was two-time champion Fernando Alonso and four-time champion Sebastian Vettel, who swapped the fastest times at the top of the rankings.

Although it would definitely be a surprise if one of the drivers was at the top of the standings, they both looked very comfortable in these insidious conditions and it is best to rush in if the opportunity arises.


# 4 Mercedes missed a trick by not learning more about the conditions

Mercedes seems to be like that suffering from “big team syndrome” as expensive thinking is still the same, although the car loses its usual competitiveness in front of the grille. Therefore, Mercedes may have simply missed its best opportunity at the 2022 F1 Canadian GP to win this season.

The qualifying session for the 2022 F1 Canadian GP may have similar conditions as the FP3. And yet, while Aston Martin and alpine drivers pushed around the track to gain an advantage, Mercedes drivers sat in the garage. Right now, if Red Bull and Ferrari drop out, Aston Martin and Alpine are in a position to take advantage. Mercedes, for its part, missed a number there.


# 5 We can see a few punches and turns in qualifying

IN Canadian GP track not the most forgivable in dry conditions. In the wet, however, it turns into something else. While we didn’t see too many drivers spinning or crashing during FP3, it was primarily because they didn’t push so hard.

For the F1 Canadian GP qualification in 2022, these pilots will push in insidious conditions on a street track. Get ready for a spin or two and the introduction of a strange red flag here and there.
